My parents are practice different religions, one is Christian, and the other is Buddhist.

Growing up, I didn't really participate or feel strongly in either until very recently. As the people close to me have known, my grandmother passed away 2 years ago. Although I was not close with her, I participated for the first time in many Buddhist rituals during her funeral, and this triggered active exploration of multiple types of religion, including Christianity. I've been attending both Buddhist temples around the world, and Christian churches too, in an attempt to become closer to God.

Throughout my exploration of these religious sites I've always noticed that they have a particular smell. The Buddhist monastery I visited, Empty Cloud in New Jersey, smelled like incense. Since people have allergies now, it's unusual to have incense burning, but I smelled it as soon as I walked in and it was pleasant.

Last year I visited the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. It has a particular smell of wet concrete, and if you sit on the pews on the very front you can smell the wood, and the wood stain. Pews were also the longest religious furniture project that Antoni Gaudí worked on.

Both times I had felt my relationship with God had grown stronger, and through my experience of being present in church pews and on floor zafus, there just is, to me, this distinct smell associated with religion. And those experiences brought me enormous peace.

I feel as though God can be found in many places, all around you, in smells. And for those who are not religious, inner peace can be found in smells too. Everyone has a smell that brings them peace, whether it's your favourite dessert, your grandma's house, or the skin scent of your loved one.

This scent to me gives me peace, and is an ultimate culmination of my experiences becoming closer to God. I hope that this candle can bring you peace, if you are not religious, and if you are religious, you are able to become closer to God smelling this too.

Materials

Each Humankind candle is crafted from the finest natural coconut soy wax from a farm in Iowa, ensuring a clean, long-lasting burn. The wicks are made from FSC-certified wood, free from lead or other harmful substances, guaranteeing a safe and eco-friendly experience. The candles are hand-poured in downtown Toronto, by Sam.

How to Use

To get the best burn, let the wax melt all the way to the edges of the jar on the first light—this helps prevent tunneling. Trim the wick to about ¼ inch before each use to keep the flame steady and clean. Never burn for more than 2 hours at a time, and always place your candle on a heat-safe surface, away from drafts, pets, or anything that might catch. When you're done, gently blow it out or use a snuffer, and let it cool before moving or relighting. Burn mindfully and enjoy.

New packaging looks great. I found reading some of the text on certain panels was challenging due to font size and background color.

I've only had this candle for about two weeks, and I cannot stop lighting it! I am already halfway through it. It makes the whole house smell like baked goods, which makes it unfortunate that I cannot eat it. Any time someone walks in while it has been lit, they always ask if something is being baked. I normally am not a fan of sweet scents, but this candle has a very gentle sweetness to it that isn't overwhelming, but rather addicting. It is the candle equivalent of eating an entire package of cookies!
